WhatsApp AI vs a chatbot: what is the difference?
Short answer: A traditional chatbot follows scripted menus and keywords, so it breaks as soon as a customer writes something unexpected. A WhatsApp AI built on a language model understands free text in any language, checks your real systems before answering, completes the booking or order, and hands the conversation to a person when it should.
How a traditional chatbot works
A scripted chatbot matches keywords or offers buttons: press 1 for opening hours, 2 for prices. It is predictable, but customers have to adapt to it. Anything outside the script ends in “Sorry, I did not understand” or a handover with no context.
How an AI order channel works
An AI channel lets customers write the way they talk. It works out what they want, asks only for what is missing, looks up prices and availability in your systems, and confirms in writing. When a request is unusual or sensitive, it passes the full conversation to your team.
How to tell which one you are buying
Ask the vendor three questions:
- Can a customer write a full request in one free-text message and get a correct answer?
- Does it check live data in our systems, or answer from a fixed script or document?
- What exactly happens when it is unsure, and does our team get the full context?
When a simple chatbot is enough
If customers only ever ask a handful of fixed questions, a scripted bot can be fine. Once requests vary, involve your own data, or lead to bookings and orders, an AI channel is the better fit.
